Designing a UX for street food involves addressing safety and language barriers, which are crucial when exploring culinary land scapes abroad.
The Yummy Planet app redefines travel for Gen Z with culinary exploration, eco-awareness, gamification, and local immersion. Its personalized, responsible approach enriches the travel experience, engaging a younger demographic while promoting sustainability.
The Challenge
We encounter numerous challenges when attempting to enjoy street food in specific areas, particularly when abroad. These include overcoming language barriers, adhering to personal dietary restrictions, and dealing with the sometimes less-than-perfect accuracy of applications or guides.
While conducting my competitive analysis, I discovered various types of competitors, including not just other applications but also media platforms.
Google Maps provides users with an interactive platform to explore diverse dining spots, including restaurants, eateries, food trucks, and culinary highlights, providing reviews, ratings, and comprehensive details for an enriched dining experience.
TV Shows can entice its audience through a diverse culinary exploration, engaging entertainment, educational content, celebrity chef insights, and inspiration to try new recipes
A food blog offers a platform for culinary exploration, sharing diverse recipes, cooking tips, food photography, personal stories, and engaging content that inspires and educates food enthusiasts.
Lineman Wongnai provides user reviews and recommendations for restaurants and other food-related business.
We went to Khaosan Rd. to interview the tourists to see their problems during walking around in Bangkok

After we’ve done our interviews with our users we can see that there are around 84% of the people desire the incorporation of a wide variety of culinary experiences while travelling
Hygiene / Safety Concerns
Backpackers are scared of getting food poisoning from street food and are worried about becoming sick because they think it is unhygienic.
Discover Street Food
Backpackers want to easily discover street food while they are on their trip.
Communication Issues
Most food menus are in Thai language, so it’s difficult for backpackers to understand what the food contains. They need a better way to speak to the vendors about their vegan diet, spicy or no spicy food, and what they are allergic to.
Meet Safety Henry, he’s 24 voluteer student from Canada that want to see a street life and cultural culinary experiences.
- He has nevery expereince street food before, and now he’s faced with challenge of figuring out which street food vender stall is the best for his first time.
- He also struggle to eat because he’s afraid of the food that wheter is safe to consume or not.
- So his goal is to experiece the culinary experience on the street safe and find the best for his first time.
A mobile app showcasing popular food vendors, facilitating user-vendor communication, enabling meal customization for various diets, and providing insightful information about traditional Thai street food dishes. So our Safety Henry will experience the street food safely .
We creatively conceptualize solutions inspired by user feedback and research to enhance the overall user experience.
Through extensive research, we're developing an application aimed at educating users about common street food dishes. It focuses on building trust, customizing meals to accommodate various dietary restrictions.
Additionally, the app highlights popular or Michelin-rated vendors and aims to improve communication between users and these vendors, enhancing their overall experience.
After we have done our research and personas we designed our app structure to before outline the path of our users
After identifying our structure we outlined our user flow to see how can the user go with our application in two ways. So we can see the user's progress starting from the launch of the application until the end.
Before making our wireframe on the computer, we quickly sketch out basic ideas by hand. This helps us come up with more thoughts and plan out our strategy before finalizing the digital version of the wireframe.
In this case study section, we delve into the journey that brought our ideas to life with a strong user focus. From comprehensive research to creative ideation, and meticulous UI design, each phase contributes to a seamless, visually captivating, and highly engaging product.
